Brimming with epic, arena-sized anthems, Only By the Night is the expansive fourth album from Kings of Leon. The release of Kings of Leon's third album Because of the Times showed a noticeable change in sound for the Tennessee Indie quartet. The rough-edged country rock of their debut album Youth and Young Manhood was replaced by a plethora of cleaned up new-wave tracks and it is a progression that continues with Only By the Night.
The tidal wave of glitchy guitars on opening number,'Closer', segues perfectly into the sludgy swamp-rock of 'Crawl', melding Led-Zeppelin-styled crunch with experimental guitar buzz, the tracks flex the band's rock and roll muscle to great effect. Chart-topping single, 'Sex on Fire', fronts a succession of songs with meteoric choruses that are tailored to singer Caleb Followill's raspy, contagious vocals. Tracks 'Use Somebody' and 'Manhattan' see guitarist Matthew Followill cloak his guitar riffs in reverb, as bassist Jared Followill takes the spotlight sporadically, popping up for quick melodic fills before ducking back in to the mix. As the band experiment with texture and structure in the hauntingly exposed 'Cold Desert', it is the steady and unique drumming patterns of Nathan Followill that ensure that Kings of Leon's recognisable style is very much alive.
Kings of Leon have grown further in stature, confidence, and ability with each album and this release doesn't buck that trend. Taking its lead from the post-punk primitivism of Because of the Times, Only By the Night sees Kings of Leon develop on their adept style further by slowing down track tempo and attacking new instrumental structures. With U2 inspired lines that open up space for sounds to prowl and insulate, Kings of Leon have produced an accomplished new album that delivers on a grand scale.

This is by no means my favourite Kings of Leon album, that award goes to Aha Shake Heartbreak, however this is still a fantastic album that any fan will love. I don't understand all the complaining about them going mainstream, they don't choose to become mainstream, it's the fans and critics that do that. It's brilliant that they have finally received the acclaim that they have deserved for so long. Stand out tracks for me are 'Crawl', 'Closer' and 'Be Somebody' , although there are no weak tracks on this album.
Simply put this is a fantastic album and i can't wait for album number 5 from Kings of Leon.
